Michael Shermer

We are living in the most moral period of human history, and we have science to thank for it, says dr. Shermer. From Galileo and Newton to Thomas Hobbes and Martin Luther King, Jr., thinkers throughout history have consciously employed scientific techniques to better understand the non-physical world. Subsequently we now live in a world in which more people in more places have greater rights, freedoms, liberties, literacy, education, and prosperity than ever before.

Bestselling author and science writer Michael Shermer explores how scientific ways of thinking  – like abstract reasoning, rationality, empiricism, skepticism – have profoundly changed the way we perceive morality and, indeed, move us ever closer to a more just world.

Michael Shermer has written a dozen books, including the New York Times bestsellers Why People Believe Weird Things and The Believing Brain. His new book is The Moral Arc: How Science and Reason Lead Humanity Toward Truth, Justice, and Freedom. Dr. Shermer is the Publisher of Skeptic magazine, a monthly columnist for Scientific American, a regular contributor to Time.com, and a Presidential Fellow at Chapman University. His two TED talks were voted as among the top 100 best TED talks from the thousands at TED.com.
