The Erasmus Pavilion is built in the new heart of campus Woudestein Erasmus University Rotterdam. Designed by Powerhouse Company and The Black Dog, it plays a vital role as a booster and condenser of the new public spatial structure of the Woudestein campus, both functionally and symbolically. At the intersection of the two main axes, with an all-sided orientation, the building occupies a central position on campus, where research meets business and science mixes with culture. Everywhere in the pavilion you have a view of the campus, made possible by the height differences in the building and the glass facade.
The basis of the design is the integral approach to program, intimacy, flexibility, sustainability and design. A building that adapts to the different seasons and light of the day but can also adapt to the events held there. The building’s facade mediates between the exterior and interior. It consists of slats, which can open to the light. A facade that literally adapts to weather and light conditions. This saves energy and provides an ever-changing appearance of the pavilion and a wide view across campus.
The organization of the Erasmus Pavilion strives to treat people, animals and the environment as sustainably as possible. We do this in several ways.
The flexible louvers on the facade allow the flow of light and heat to be regulated according to the weather, light and seasons. It also uses natural ventilation, heat and cold from the ground (WKO) and solar panels on the roof. The Erasmus Pavilion is connected to a WKO source, where energy is stored in the ground at a depth of about 175 meters. Also, the Erasmus Pavilion uses waterless urinals.
In addition to our energy supply, we also handle products and furniture sustainably in the grand café. Organic and local products are served whenever possible, all prepared in our own kitchen. Our coffee is fair trade, biodegradable disposables and the furniture vintage.
