Fascism. Most consider it an ideology that was indicative of the first half of the 20th century. But with the current rise and success of many radical right-wing parties, fascism seems to be making a comeback. Is this really the case or has fascism just become a buzzword? What is it anyway, can it really be defined? And: Does it still play a role in the present?

During What The Fascism? historian Dr. Daniel Knegt will explain all about the infamous ideology. From its origins in the early 20th century and the world war it led to, to its downfall and the influence the ideology still has on the world today. How do democracies become authoritarian? What can we learn from fascism’s great appeal and great defeat in the past? And is a new fascism ruled out or a bitter reality?

Dr. Daniel Knegt teaches modern history in the history department of the University of Amsterdam. He received his PhD from the European University Institute in Florence on research into fascism and is author of the paperback book “Fascism” in the Elementary Particles series.

This event is organized by Studium Generale.
