The start of Donald Trump’s new administration has intensified public discussions about migration. But little is said about the experience of migration and diaspora in the voices of those who have left their countries of origin in search of better living conditions. Filmmakers Carlos Hagerman and Jorge Villalobos have captured these experiences in their animated adult documentary Home is Somewhere Else.
Dr. Amanda Paz Alencar and Dr. Ana Uribe Sandoval will introduce Home is Somewhere Else. The film won awards at festivals around the world, including IDFA. Three different life stories with three different animation styles. Dr. Paz Alencar will also present the Translocal Lives project, started at EUR, empowering migrants coming to the Netherlands to tell their stories. Dr. Uribe Sandoval, course coordinator of Media in Latin America, will kick off the Spanish film festival she is organizing with her students as part of the course.
About the documentary:
Home Is Somewhere Else is an animated documentary that provides a glimpse into the hearts and minds of undocumented immigrant youth and their families. It features three stories, each animated in a different style and voiced by the children and their families, woven together by spoken word artist Lalo “El Deportee.”
Languages spoken: Spanish, English (with English subtitles)
This program is a collaboration with Dr. Ana Uribe Sandoval, Studium Generale and ESN-Rotterdam.
