Brown Bag Lecture: Martijn Kleppe

More than a thousand words: Martijn Kleppe on iconic photographs

Where is the charisma in Che Guevara’s face? And what is the reason that we all know the picture of the Chinese Tank Man that became a symbol for protest against totalitarian regimes? On Tuesday 5 November Martijn Kleppe (historian) speaks on media conception and iconic photographs.

Martijn Kleppe specialized in photo journalism and iconic photographs. He is currently working as a researcher for the Erasmus School of History, Culture & Communication and is known as a columnist for the prestigious daily newspaper NRC Handelsblad (http://www.nrc.nl/beeldverhaal).

His dissertation (http://www.eur.nl/nieuws/detail/article/45502-canonieke-icoonfotos-de-rol-van-persfotos-in-de-nederlandse-geschiedschrijving/), earlier this year, generated a lot of media attention.

About the Brown bag lectures

A masterclass how to perform a TED lecture, a lecture on the financial crisis or a performance by a philosopher – magician. The Brown Bag Lectures of SG Erasmus serves you every week a new insight or an inspiring guest speaker from September onwards. During lunch time in the Erasmus Pavilion.

The upcoming Brown Bag Lectures are as different as the studies offered by the Erasmus University, but their goal is the same: to look beyond ones field of science and interest.

The lunch lectures are held every week on Tuesday or Wednesday (from 12.30 to 13.30) in the auditorium of the Erasmus Pavilion. Freely accessible (also for non-students) and in English. The kitchen of the Erasmus Pavilion is open for lunch, but bringing your own lunch is also allowed during this program.

Brown Bag Lectures include:

  • Wed 25 Sept: Tilman Andris (magician and scientist) about trust
  • Wed Oct 2: Victor Vlam on the 7 secrets of a brilliant TED talk
  • Wed Oct 9: Prof. Maarten Frens (brain scientist) on external brain stimulation.
  • Wed 16 Oct: Prof. Jaap van Duijn (former CEO Robeco) about the euro crisis.
